The Spelleplekke lies in a recess between the Plaatsduinen and the Duinpark neighbourhood which was developed around 1930. On the eastern edge of the Spelleplekke lies the large nature reserve Ter Yde. The term Yde used to refer to a shelter harbour.

Such a harbour, New Yde, was located at the place now called Spelleplekke, at the edge of a wide sea inlet, the Vloedgat.

Archaeological finds at the beginning of the last century, especially heaps of pins ('spelle' in dialect), provided the naming of that place ('plekke').

The Spelleplekke has the shape of an elongated tub alternating between shifting dunes and thickets. Larger level differences occur in the edge areas.
